When Do Space first approached us to design a summer passport for kids – it felt like a dream come true.
Jessica, Rachel and Rebecca had an incredible vision for this project and we couldn’t wait to run with it! During our first meeting – we quickly realized that this was going to be one of our favorite pieces.
We always start our design projects with an interactive mood board – made up of inspirational images we find on the web. The conversation that emerges from this step helps establish an overall look and feel for a project. For the summer passport, we pulled together a mood board of various styles – and from there, narrowed it down to a simple, yet fun, illustration style that fit within the established Do Space brand.
Next, we continued our design process with some sketches to focus on a specific direction and from there created an icon set that would be used through out the piece. Getting to draw rocket ships and hot dogs certainly isn’t an opportunity that comes along every day – so we were more than happy to oblige!
While the piece itself is loosely based on a real passport, we took some liberties and made it something that would be simple to use and would appeal to a younger audience. The books will serve to track achievements of the kids in the various categories and at the end of the summer can be entered into a drawing for prizes.
We created an additional icon set for the physical rubber stamps – and we were delighted to hear that the Do Space team planned to fabricate them in-house on their very own 3D printer! We were over the moon with the final result.
Teaming up with such a collaborative, forward-thinking client like Do Space was a total blast – and we can’t wait to hear all about what these kids learn and create this summer!
