Game Development Fundamentals


Interested in game development but don’t know where to start? This summer, Do Space will be offering a brand new, eight session, Game Design Fundamentals Bootcamp. During this time, participants will learn the fundamentals of making video games by using Godot, a lightweight, powerful, and flexible 2D and 3D game engine. This course is designed to provide participants with knowledge and project based experience of fundamental game development concepts related to STEM including game design, scripting, creation of digital assets, graphic resources, problem solving, critical thinking, collaboration, and project management.

This bootcamp is intended for those 15 and older or those that have previously participated in our Make.Hack.Build program. Anyone under the age of 19 cannot participate without parental consent.

For the safety of our staff and our members this bootcamp will be online via Discord. We will utilize both the video and text chat features. You will need a computer and access to the internet to attend.

APPLICATIONS ARE CURRENTLY OPEN. The last day to apply for the brand new game development fundamentals bootcamp will be Friday, June 4th. First session date is Thursday, June 10th at 6:00pm.

What are we doing?
During the Game Development Fundamentals Bootcamp participants will learn the fundamentals of making video games by using Godot, a lightweight, powerful, and flexible 2D and 3D game engine. At the end of this course, participants will have made a 2D Zelda style game and another game created with assets provided by the instructor that the participant will have explored and made solely on their own.

When is it?
This brand new summer bootcamp will be eight sessions held every other Thursday starting June 10th at 6:00pm. with the last meetup being September 16th.

Who can apply?
This bootcamp is intended for those 15 and older or those that have previously participated in our Make.Hack.Build program. Anyone under the age of 19 cannot participate without parental consent.

How Much Will it Cost?
Nothing! Like all Do Space programs, this bootcamp is offered FREE to the public.

What kind of person should apply?

  • You have a “whatever it takes” work ethic.
  • You identify problems and work to solve them.
  • You move quickly and hustle to find ways to overcome obstacles.
  • You feel comfortable with computers and want to learn more.
  • You enjoy meeting and working with new people.

What computer skills do I need?
You should feel comfortable using your computer. You should be accustomed to typing, using a mouse, navigating the internet, and using email and other programs. Experience with basic algebra, coding practices, or previous basic game design might be helpful.

What do I need?

  • Access to a computer and the internet (this can be at home, at Do Space, or any other location)
  • An email address
  • Agree to adhere to the Do Space behavioral policy and code of conduct
  • Attend eight online meetings during the course of your session
  • Commit to completing the assigned online work set by your instructor between each meeting

When will I find out if I am selected?
Notices of acceptance will be sent out via email no later than June 7th.
