Presenter: Pat Wagner

A community is a place where people are seriously concerned about each other's well-being and act on those feelings. Community is where the expectation is that if something is needed, someone can be found who will have the right answer. In community, we feel resourceful. A community takes up the worst of the burdens of life on its own shoulders.

To create community online means to pay attention to people individually and to support a virtual environment where generosity is encouraged. Community building is practical, not just theoretical and can be part of most online experiences. And, it is not just the conversation between one person or agency, and the general public. Community building, when successful, generates a network of people who connect with each other directly.

We will use the national neighborhood platform, Nextdoor, on how to do it right…and wrong. Topics include the need to set parameters and community standards, oversight, success stories, building trust and respect, and when to weed.

Pat Wagner has been active online even before the Internet. She has been an active Nextdoor user since 2013.
